AD5205 - Communication
Started the second year of graphic design and we continued the band brief we got over the summer for the Communication module. We needed to create a logo, album cover, and identity for it, as well a secondary part (I made a poster and a ticket).
Lance Wyman - LJMU
I went to see Lance Wyman give a lecture last Monday and learnt a lot from his insightful talk. He spoke briefly on Mexico ‘68, arguably his most renowned work, how he got to do it, as well as the thought process behind the finished product. His personal history has helped his career he says, working in a factory during college allowed him to be comfortable with all the tools an apparatus he needed to use.
He said that he doesn’t see it as branding anymore, more “urban imaging” and that culture and society of the place influences the work he creates. He gave numerous examples of how the placeholders of the icons symbolised shapes in the respective cities history. This was also true for the actual icons he used for the work, such as the metro signs in Mexico.
His work for the Minnesota Zoo also made me see iconography a whole different way, it truly showed me the potential of icons and typefaces when they’re tied in heavily to the subject, while still having a function.
He finished the talk with a Q&A, there were a couple of interesting questions, one person asked if he could give any advice on how to have an illustrious life like he has led, Lance’s response? “Just show up”.
AD5204 - Design Research Methods
Test shots from the video showing the client what the app will do, the video starts with the logo that leads to the iPhone splash screen. Other screens show the app in use and how the map works to show the user locations, as well as a social feed.
Back again.
Doing some editorial stuff in graphic design where we make an 8 page spread and use the our essays as the content, mainly so we focus more on the type setting and layout of the piece. Really enjoyed it. Beneath is the digital solution to the print version.
